Ingrowing toenail treatment in Nuneaton

An ingrowing toenail happens when the edge of the nail presses or grows into the skin beside it, most often on the big toe. It can be very painful and, left alone, can become infected. Most cases can be settled without surgery.

What Julie can do

Julie carefully finds and removes the offending edge or spike of nail, clears any debris from the nail fold, and smooths the edge so it grows out cleanly. For most people that brings quick relief. She will show you how to cut your nails to stop it happening again, and advise on footwear if tight shoes are part of the cause.

Julie does not carry out nail surgery. If your toenail is badly infected, or keeps ingrowing despite conservative treatment, she will recommend you see your GP or a podiatrist, who can offer partial nail removal under local anaesthetic.

Cutting your nails to prevent it

Cut straight across, not too short, and do not dig down the sides. Leave the corners just visible. If your nails are thick or hard to reach, a regular nail-cutting appointment is an easy way to stay ahead of it.

When to see your GP first

If the toe is hot, very red or swollen, there is pus, or redness is spreading up the foot, see your GP promptly as you may need antibiotics. Julie can then treat the nail once the infection has settled.

Common questions

Will I need surgery?
Most ingrowing toenails do not. Removing the offending edge and changing how the nail is cut is enough for the majority of people. Julie will tell you honestly if yours is one that needs a podiatrist.
Is the treatment painful?
The toe is usually sore before treatment; the treatment itself is gentle and most people feel better as soon as the pressure is released.

Julie Ford is a foot health practitioner (Dip FHP, MCFHP, MAFHP), not a podiatrist. Where a problem needs a podiatrist or your GP, she will say so and help you get seen.
